Keeping in Touch - October
IMPORTANT HEALTH & SAFETY ADVICE FOR YOU THIS MONTH AND NEXT!!
Road walking is our biggest safety risk! Generally, as a group, our road walking discipline could do with some improvement.
This is what the Highway Code says:
If there is no pavement, keep to the right-hand side of the road so that you can see oncoming traffic.
You should take extra care and be prepared to walk in single file, especially on narrow roads or in poor light. Keep close to the side of the road.
It may be safer to cross the road well before a sharp right-hand bend so that oncoming traffic has a better chance of seeing you. Cross back after the bend.
Our additional suggestions are:
The walk leader or a committee member will highlight any road walking at the beginning of the day and remind members of the need to stay in single file, close to the side of the road and to be alert to traffic.
When approaching a blind bend, the walk leader will stop at a safe distance to allow members to catch up and we’ll cross together.
Let’s remind each other to STAY SAFE!
Let’s also try to keep road walking to a minimum on our walks.
Map-reading and navigation days A reminder that we have two events coming up this autumn. Please contact the appropriate leader to book in!
26th October will be for beginners and basic skills led by Val email@example.com
More details with this programme.
2nd November will be for more advanced skills including a chance to experience night navigation. This will be led by Dave P. firstname.lastname@example.org
Informal weekends away Many thanks to Alan for leading the recent excellent weekend in Barmouth. This is our last scheduled weekend for this year. Look out for our draft plan for next year coming your way from Andy!
Our Christmas walk and social is on 15th December! Our base is Great Witley Village Hall. For those who haven’t been before, we have a slightly shorter walk followed by a “bring and share” meal. David M will be leading our walk, supported by Veronica, and everyone is invited to come in fancy dress or Christmas hats.
See you out on a walk soon!
