August bank holiday saw a group of Single Booters head off to the Lakes for a long weekend based in Eskdale. Several braved the excellent campsite, mostly in tents with one member trying out a camping pod (or Hobbit house!) For those wanting more comfort, the pubs provided B&B.
Saturday was a spectacular walk heading up to Whin Rigg via Blea tarn and Miterdale and then on to Illgill Head. The return to Eskdale was via Burnmoor tarn. The day was stunning with beautifully clear views, particularly over Wastwater.
After quite a bit rain in previous days, crossing the little stream by Burnmoor tarn proved a challenge but all made it safely! After this wonderful day in the mountains, everyone piled into the lovely Brookside Inn for a delicious meal, a few beers and a taste of whiskey.
Sunday’s weather was disappointing, so the planned walk was aborted. Instead we boarded the little steam train and travelled to the coast where we walked round the estuary at Ravenglass. The the weather was a little kinder here. After enjoying some food at the train station cafe we took the train back to Eskdale.
Most stayed again on the Sunday night and after taking tents down a few had another low level walk before heading back home.
